Janet Bruce was born in Washington, DC and received a BA with honors in painting from Amherst College, MA where she studied with Grace Hartigan. For several decades Janet Bruce has been exploring the intersection between abstract painting and landscape.
In the spring of 2025, Janet exhibited in Paris, France at the Fondation La Ruche-Seydoux. She was awarded a commission for five large-scale paintings for the permanent collection of the University of Virginia. One of her paintings was selected by Charlotte Moss for the Southern Living Idea House in Charlottesville, VA.
Her work has been shown in New York with Gerald Bland, and across DC and Virginia, including exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (curated by William Christenberry), in several one-person exhibitions at Les Yeux du Monde Gallery, and along side of Joan Mitchell in “Lady Painters” at Second Street Gallery, Charlottesville. Her paintings are in a number of private and public collections in the US, France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.
