Rocaille Revisited: Ceramics by Eve Kaplan

ROCAILLE REVISITED: New Ceramic Work By Eve Kaplan On view from May 7 - 22nd 2014

Opening Preview: Wednesday, May 7, 2014 6-9pm

Gerald Bland is pleased to announce the opening of a new gallery in The Fine Arts Building on East 59th Street, showcasing the first solo exhibition of ceramicist Eve Kaplan. Entitled “Rocaille Revisited,” the artist’s reinterpretation of 18th century Rococo forms will be on view – including ceramic mirrors and lighting.

Artist Biography
Eve Kaplan's hand built ceramic work is infused with inspiration from 18th century gilded pieces.  They have drawn comparisons to the mid-century work of Line Vautrin yet her sculptural objects are entirely modern and unique. Eve’s wonderfully Baroque mirrors, lighting, and furniture incorporating both low-fired glazing as well as traditional gilding techniques are all available exclusively through Gerald Bland Inc.

Born in Oslo, Norway, the daughter of a Norwegian mother and New Yorker father, Eve Kaplan moved to New York City after studying painting and sculpture at Bennington College. Working in restoration at Thorpe Brothers she came to specialize in gilding and went on open her own studio. While continuing her career as a gilder of fine antiques she also studied ceramics at Greenwich House.

Eve and Gerald have worked together for over 25 years. Initially as a restorer of fine 18th century gilded furniture and mirrors, Eve handled all of Gerald's gilding restoration.  Five years ago, Gerald discovered the unusual and striking ceramic creations in Eve's studio – particularly a powerful, mid-Georgian mirror, composed of what appeared to be rocks, shiny and black with traces of iridescent green.  Within days, the mirror was sold to a client of the interior designer Michael Smith through Bland’s Madison Avenue store, establishing the official creative relationship between Gerald and Eve.
