Gerald Bland is pleased to feature works by new artist Janet Mait.

From the artist:

My collection of paintings ‘New Shoes’ began as a challenge. I had been a sculptor all of my life, working from the figure exclusively. After many years of working in clay, I yearned to experiment with a different medium. I had dabbled briefly with painting and so the canvas felt like a natural choice for a new beginning. This time it felt free and wonderful. I went from the figure and terracotta to the world of acrylics and abstract expressionism.

When I paint, I think about space, color and balance. Canvas size varies but I prefer the openness of large-scale pieces. I try hard not to plan in advance. If I think too much before I begin, I am not able to paint. In order to be free and spontaneous, I simply let the brush go. I think a lot about the white spaces and their importance helps me to define the composition of my work. I dream about color combinations and often integrate these visions into my work.

My paintings express my feelings. I believe that art comes from within and my use of vibrant colors is reflective of the sense of optimism I have about the next chapter in my life.

Janet resides in Manhattan after raising her family in Larchmont, New York. She has 4 adult children and two granddaughters, who all bring joy to her life.

Born in Oslo, Norway, the daughter of a Norwegian mother and New Yorker father, Eve Kaplan moved to New York City after studying painting and sculpture at Bennington College. Working in restoration at Thorpe Brothers she came to specialize in gilding and went on open her own studio, FitzKaplan with Diane Fitzgerald. While continuing her career as a gilder of fine antiques she also studied ceramics at Greenwich House.

Jon Groom was born in 1953 in Powys, Wales. He went to Cardiff College of Art to study sculpture, later to switch to painting. In 1976 Groom was accepted into the postgraduate department of Chelsea School of Art, London, followed by a fellowship in painting at Gloucestershire College of Art in 1977.

Arriving in New York in 1978, it was a place of great transition. Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko had died eight years before, abstract expressionism was waning and Minimalism along with reductive painting seemed to offer a new direction. Groom picked up on the new energy that was emerging and which affirmed many of his artistic beliefs.

In recent years he has completed numerous multiple-paper watercolors and shown alongside two main themes, Cycles of the Day of 2000 – 2006 and Between the Light of 2002 – 2006. These have not previously been exhibited as a group; they form the main body of the exhibition at the Museum Ludwig, Koblenz.

Watercolors can be made without much baggage and for Groom this has meant a great flexibility that has enabled him to make many paintings on journeys over the last few years, most notably on three recent trips to India. The watercolors have had the effect of opening up his work on canvas as the artist has worked in parallel in both media.

In 2003 Groom was offered the wing of a castle in Lower Bavaria at Mariakirchen, Arnstorf. The place itself has inspired many works, the multiple-paper watercolors and paintings, especially a group of works called The Eight Seasons that was made in the studio there. During this time Groom also worked in a studio in Hanau/Frankfurt, where many large-scale paintings were completed, including the two paintings for Hanau Congress Centre and the large entrance paintings for the Degussa Bank. But his main place of work during the last two years has been the studio at Ismaninger Strasse in Munich. In 2006 Groom married Dorna Hekmat in India.

We are pleased to announce new works on view from artist Philip Allen.

From the artist:

I was born in New York City in 1952 and went to both private and public schools. I began taking figure drawing at the Art Students League when I was 12.

My father was a very gifted artist, studied with Hans Hoffman, and–having been born in 1909– explored all the rich artistic territory covered by members of his generation, the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. Through his influence, everything from social realism and regionalist type landscape, to surrealism, collage, drip painting and all in between became part of my vocabulary.

Early on I became entranced with Italian Renaissance art and spent many hours of my childhood drawing copies of the figures of Michelangelo, Titian, Tintoretto, Leonardo, Pallaioullo Signiorelli and El Greco from my parent’s collection of art books. I didn’t see this as trying to learn anything, it was just a kind of compulsion to be able to produce things with the same kind of force, power and beauty I saw in their work. Of course, I inadvertently learned a great deal. I also unconsciously absorbed a very high standard for my work.

Later, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, Picasso, Soutine, Miro, Matisse, Gorky, DeKooning, Pollock & Guston became important influences.

Ultimately, my interior compass sought concordance with my surroundings. The Art that was created in New York by my father’s generation felt the most true to my experiences. So I am, a third generation Abstract Expressionist, Action Painter, New York School Painter, what have you. What I bring to the language that’s new and different is use of certain 16th century Venetian painting materials and methods, a search to establish a kind of boundless, open space, and an interplay of solidity and translucency of form. I also aim to invest my work with emotional truth and formal aesthetic and historical weight.

Cezanne is quoted as having said, “I want to make of impressionism an art like that of the museums.” Like me, he had fallen under the spell of the 16th century Venetians, particularly Veronese, and he was looking for a way to achieve the kind of solidity, spaciousness, obsessive traversal of the surface of things and grandeur, present in Veronese’s work.

In like form, I want to make of Abstract Expressionism, “an art like that of the museums.” Of course, it already is an art ensconced in mainstream thought and certainly in the museums. The question for me is whether or not this particular language remains vital, whether it contains the ability to create new and surprising and profound images. My judgment has been that it does, and so I push on.

My work is in the collections of the former director of the Whitney Museum, David Ross, Ted Stebbins, former Curator of Contemporary American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the collection of a late curator for the Menil Collection and the Guggenheim Museum, Walter Hopps.

I taught painting and materials usage and techniques in the Fine Arts Department of Parsons for a decade, and also was a faculty member at The School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Additionally, I have been a visiting artist at RISD, The School of Visual Arts, NYU, and others.

I have been a recipient of an NEA grant, a New York State Council on the Arts Award (under its CAPS program), a Tiffany Foundation Award, and an Award in the Visual Arts (AVA).

I studied at The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture with Mercedes Matter, George McNeil, Jack Tworkov, Paul Georges and had seminars with Wayne Thiebaud and Philip Guston. I also studied at the Art Students League with Will Barnett and Theodoros Stamos.

We are pleased to announce new works from Harry Cushing and Juliana Merz.

Harry began his career as a portrait and fashion photographer. Through a turn of events, this lead to 15 years in the world of home furnishings textiles where he held a number of posts. Ultimately, he ran the venerable firm of Clarence House. The pursuit of a more comprehensive personal vision led to work for several design firms, large and small and resulted in the formation of Harry Cushing & Company in early 2007. The firm’s design approach has evolved in collaboration with Juliana Merz who is a fine arts painter. Juliana has been involved in the world of interior design over the years through decorative painting commissions and her own design projects. The company changed its name to nil studio at the begining of 2010.

The team’s approach to design has been described as ‘organic…simple, very livable, real, with a variety of textures, and an intriguing color palette using a combination of materials. It is not defined by any particular style but a specific sensibility.’

Models of understated luxury, Koeppel’s gilt pieces are made in the hand-coiled tradition and fired with oxides, then gilded in precious metals. She draws her inspiration from the pure and precise lighting design created by Alberto Giacometti and Diego Giacometti for Jean-Michel Frank. The resulting functional artworks are each one-of-a-kind and include custom shades and electrical components that are carefully considered design details.

Andrea received a BFA from Pratt Institute, and studied at FIT and Greenwich House Pottery. Also an apparel designer, her clients included Takishimaya and Barney’s New York.

About the artist:

Born in New York City, Christopher Flach received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Marietta College and a PhD in Psychology from Saybrook Institute in San Francisco. After co-founding luxury interior design firms Martha Angus Inc. and Angus Caravelli Inc., he relocated to New York where he is currently based. Christopher’s work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and public spaces worldwide and featured in various publications such as The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, House Beautiful and Elle Decor.

Fine art photographer, Diane Epstein, has a keen eye towards bringing to life Ancient and Renaissance Rome, as well as other old-world cities. Epstein captures an original view of the monuments, statues, fountains and the hidden with a textural, timeless quality. With her own innovative form of fresco photographs™, she revives the large-scale narrative painting and panoramic vistas of another time, while still retaining the architectural details of today. The result, reminiscent of Renaissance fresco paintings, transports the viewer deep within the crackling surfaces, architectural lines and sculptural curves.

Italy, and especially Rome, where Epstein has lived since 1995, are the inspiration for works that capture the grandeur, yet honor the imperfections, the grit, the reality of degeneration. She visualizes her surroundings through their stratified depths and synthesizes her palette with scenes and details of Rome, Venice, Paris, New York, and elsewhere. Each monument, cityscape or natural element remains integral, but their crumbling surfaces and sensual contours fuse into a rich tapestry in which they are juxtaposed and overlain with varying degrees of opacity and translucence. Epstein’s contemporary technique is a reflection on architecture, illumination and the human form, all characteristic themes of Italian art and culture. These age-old elements evoke the inextricably linked fragile with the eternal.

Diane Epstein has exhibited her work widely in Italy, including at the American Academy in Rome, the American Embassy in Rome, the Belgian Ambassador’s Residence, Paolo Antonacci Gallery, John Cabot University, and the museum at Palazzo Boccarini in Amelia, Umbria. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and is currently represented in the U.S at the Gerald Bland Inc. gallery on Madison Ave. in New York City, at the Panoptican Gallery in Boston, and the Susan Calloway Gallery in Washington DC. Epstein has many important collectors and corporate clients and commissions including Swiss Reinsurance, the Canada Pavillion - Venice Biennale, various art collectors and European and American Ambassadors. Leora Armstrong grew up on the West Coast of Scotland surrounded by the sea, hills and Scottish weather. It was this changing light of the West Coast, upon the landscape, which happens so dramatically and wonderfully that has inspired her to work with colour. After graduating with Honors from Chelsea College of Art, she now lives and works in upstate New York.

Her work has been based on external light and reflection for many years. The work depicts sometimes horizons, edges of buildings or fields of colour. The joining of the two fields of colour, are often made through seeing the reflection of a colour or shadow on another plane, from either the light source or the changing dynamic of the landscape.

“There is a moment…only a second really, that one can paint when the light is perfect…sometimes, just before the sun goes or rises and the glow of warmth has crept across the trees and fields…or the shadow of a cloud moves, after the rain storm reflecting not actual colour but one that is almost surreal, and yet, it is, for that one moment, the true colour.”

John Rosis works in several painting mediums, including large-scale paintings on canvas, small-scale reverse painting on glass and collage on paper. In all his work, the image comes about as a result of the process. The subject matter of his work is line, form, texture, and color as derived from nature. Preferring a direct, hands-on process with simple shapes to create complex relationships, his approach and materials change as his visual needs evolve: “I see my role as that of a collaborator with the materials, the process, and the medium. I feel my work is successful when the process and materials come together to create new images.”

John Rosis received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from Hunter College in New York City. Previous exhibits include the Rockland Center for the Arts, Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art in Manhattan, New Haven University, The Southern Vermont Art Center, The Brooklyn Museum, The Berkshire Art Museum, The Fuller Art Museum, and the Edward Hopper House Art Center. Rosis has received numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Artists Space, and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation.

Featured Artist: Athos Zacharias

Born in Massachusetts in 1927, Zacharias arrived in New York in 1956 and joined the downtown art scene. Through the 60′s he was part of the Tenth Street Cooperative Gallery Movement, showing in collective and one-man shows. He also assisted many notable artist including Willem de Kooning. His long and still-unfolding career has produced an impressive breadth of work that is, as Zacharias describes, “rooted in the spatial traditions of modern, abstract painting.”

He has exhibited in New York, the Hamptons, Amsterdam and Tokyo and his works are held in important collections throughout the US. Zacharias currently lives and works in East Hampton, NY.

The sale consisted of three parts that included the contents of his New York apartment, the contents of his house in Southport, Conn., and drawings and sketches of projects for Parish Hadley with some earlier drawings from his days at Parsons School of Design.

Christopher was born in New York City. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, from Marietta College and a PhD in Psychology from Saybrook Institute in San Francisco. After co-founding Martha Angus Inc. and Angus Caravelli Inc., he relocated to New York City. As an Artist, Christopher’s work has been exhibited in galleries, and museums aside artists as Ed Ruscha, Kiki Smith, John Baldessari and Pat Steir. Christopher has participated in several film festivals including the Best in New Media Film Festival (Los Angeles) in 2011. In 2012, his artwork was published in the The New York Times, hosted in a group exhibition at Cheim & Read Gallery and sold at Christie’s Auction House. Coinciding with the opening of the Frieze Art Fair in 2013, Christopher participated in Creative Mischief, a one night Pop Up show at the National Academy Museum Art in New York City.
